neue diese woche

Mercedes-Benz Berlin Fashion Week starts today, July 17th, and will run until Sunday, July 20th.

The only names even slightly recognizable to most are Vivienne Westwood (who shows her ‘Anglomania’ line there), HUGO by Hugo Boss (still under the art direction of sexy Belgian Bruno Pieters) and perhaps Joop!

Since Berlin is the epicenter of this new avant-garde art scene, I wonder to what extent it has influenced its fashion community. Unfortunately, the majority of big publications ignore the work of designers outside of the major fashion capitals, so there will be no Style.com slideshow and thus no critical discussion. Not cool.

There’s been an attitude circling in the Industry lately, one of dissatisfaction and ennui. Perhaps, if editors and other bigwigs are so bored with what they’re seeing each season, they should look towards burgeoning fashion centers, where the talent may provide the breath of fresh air they so desperately crave. Otherwise they can bugger off, because—really—I’d like to see one of them stitch a needle.
