I was talking to a friend about the July issue of Vogue Italia the other day, but after rambling for some time about its significance, etc, etc, I noticed that my friend was a bit flustered and far from enthusiastic.
“So! This proves nothing. Black people are either left out or singled out and this is just another example.”
I thought about the statement for a long time, and while my friend does make a point, I maintain that this issue is tremendously important for the progression of Industry standards.
Interestingly enough, agencies usually represent many models from a diverse range of ethnic backgrounds. It’s the editors, photographers and casting agents that wield control over runways and magazine editorials (even in this issue, the first thirteen pages of ads featured all white faces.) I see this as a declaration to the individuals who, both from personal prejudice and fear of challenging the norm, regulate the monotonous lineup of blonde-headed clothes hangers and perpetuate an unrealistic, prepossessed notion of feminine beauty. It may not be a revolution, but this certainly is an awakening.
Here are some highlights
Aptly entitled "There's Only One Naomi"
Looks like a scene from her everyday life: glamourous, aloof, a little crazy.

and following Ms. Campbell...Tyra!
