Who is he? He’s the Face Hunter, Europe’s answer to the Sartorialist. The Swiss-born street fashion photographer floats around London’s Brick Lane and beyond to capture what he eyes as good fashion, then he posts his favorites on his blog. Sounds good and well, right?I’m not so convinced.
I’ve spent plenty time looking through his archives, and while I nod my hat to some of it, a lot of his work bugs the shit out of me.
Scott Schuman aims to shoot people who are not only well dressed, but who exude confidence in themselves and demonstrate that through effortless and unassuming style. Beyond being a superb photographer, he’s a true gentleman, and I honestly cannot recall one picture of his that I have not liked, loved or at least understood why it was posted.
The Face Hunter seems to be trying way too hard, and so do many of his subjects. In all fairness, Yvan is younger so the people he photographs are younger and thus less mannered in their mode of dress than most of Scott’s subjects. But still.
I am, and will always be, a Sartorialist loyalist. For those of you who dig the Misshapes and find solace on Avenue A, maybe Yvan’s your man.
