Gucci ad campaign: F/W 0809

As with the runway show, I’ve come to expect little from Gucci ad campaigns. But I like this one.
I was a fan of the Slavic bohemia idea behind Frida Giannini’s fall collection, and I think the simple, sprawling landscape in the campaign works successfully as a contrast to the deluxe character of the clothes—fur, leather, chiffon, straps, studs, ribbons, patterns, prints and more. Lily & Co. are like hippies, really rich Russian hippies entranced by the unbroken solemnity of their surroundings and the beauty of each other. It’s a scene from a Sofia Coppola film, and I’m okay with that.
