Alienesque

Anyone cool enough to remember Mars Attacks!, that campy sci-fi film with the uncommonly accomplished cast--Jack Nicolson, Annette Bening, Glenn Close, etc--in which Sarah Jessica Parker gets her head put on the body of a Chihuahua? (It was like a joke the audience wasn’t let in on.) Anyway, Lily resembles the Martian that disguises itself as a woman.

Cover Talk

I'm the one half of this blog that actually likes Keira and even I must concede: this cover is definitely not her best. She's looks sickly. But at least she's styled in Balenciaga.
and I already view Kate as a stray tabby—irreverent, messy sexy, a bit confused as to where she is at times—so this made me giggle.

les gens que j'aime…Olivier Zahm

Here he is in Balenciaga on a past cover of his fashion pub, Purple. He recently told The New York Times:

"People say my magazine is very provocative or transgressive. Not at all. If there is nudity and sex, it is not to provoke, it is to show the beauty and love. In the next issue, I have the artist Dash Snow wearing women’s clothes from the fall collections. To see a beautiful man like Dash, who for me is American aristocracy— this is inspiring."

Spoken like a true Frenchman.

Look ladies, leave the Louboutins alone

just for a second, and slip your feet into these. Why?
Because I can't.

Balenciaga ad campaign: F/W 0809

According to WWD, shortly after christening the Balenciaga flagship in Los Angeles last April, designer Nicolas Ghesquière barred shoppers from it for two days. But he had a "beautiful" reason. Ghesquière used the new 5,000-square-foot store on Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood as the location for the French brand's fall-winter campaign shoot, featuring actress Charlotte Gainsbourg.

"For me, she is one of the most inspiring girls in the world," Ghesquière enthused. "She's really representative of what France is today. She was always so modern in her choices and her way of being. She's so iconic for me."Still, Ghesquière chose to portray his friend of 10 years in line with his hyper-chic and "more mature" fall-winter collection. That meant a sleek chignon, strong makeup courtesy of Pat McGrath and arch couture poses — a contrast to the bohemian, "undone" style Gainsbourg has portrayed in other campaigns and in countless editorials."It was fun to play with her in a very sophisticated way," Ghesquière said.

David Simms shot the campaign, with the Los Angeles light rebounding off the boutique's gleaming marble floors and etched metal walls. Gainsbourg follows actress Jennifer Connelly in the Balenciaga spots, and marks a turn towards personalities at a time when many European brands are going back to using supermodels. Ghesquière said he likes to work with film stars. "They are used to playing characters and go deeper into the image," he said. "There's definitely a celebrity effect when you shoot an actress. There's a real frisson.”
